Post by Brenna A Monday night at Sin 7 Hair Salon consisted of our wonderful stylists doing a photo shoot after already putting in an 8 hour day! Clearly, these ladies just love work too much! Our stylists Chantelle, Dana, Grit, and Katherine gave our lovely models beautiful up-dos while our wonderfully talented stylist AND makeup artist (yes, she is a double threat!) Telsa did the makeup! (Telsa this day did not do any up-dos, because she was already so busy doing make up! But if you check out our Instagram page you can catch some of her work!). For our photo shoot the stylists had free range of what they wanted to do and boy, did they come up with some great stuff! Here are some behind the scene shoots before we get into the good stuff! Grit did this wonderful piece on model Mia (Pictured below). Grit is an advanced stylist who has worked at Sin 7 Salon since day one! Her work is truly incredible and one of a kind! This up-do is a showstopper! For makeup Telsa went for an edgy look on Mia! And yes, Telsa took it to the next level and did blue eye shadow! You can truly tell Telsa is a pro because I know if I were to do blue eye shadow on someone they may turn out like this: Katherine (co-owner of Sin 7 Salon) did a wonderful up-do on model, Kristen. I know most business owners would run out the door once the workday is done but not Katherine and Courtney! Katherine stayed and did this beautiful up-do on our youngest model. (Courtney unfortunately could not make it this day because she was in a hair class brushing up on those skills of hers!) You can [...]
Post by Brenna It feels like summer down at the salon! Our stylists are sporting the dresses, sandals, and the A/C is on in full swing! So to get our guests summer ready here are some summer hair trends from Glamour Magazine! These styles are from the runway such as Dolce and Gabana, Bailman, and many more. But thankfully these are some easy up-do's to get you out of the house and down to the beach in style. Trend #1: Half and Half Ah, yes, the oh so easy, but oh so stylish, half and half is back. This one is sure to get you out of the house in no time! This is one of our stylist (Chantelle's) go to style when client's want a new everyday look that takes no time. Trend #2: Accessories Now by accessories, no, we do not mean baseball caps! We work so hard to get that beautiful colour of yours why cover it up? We mean a little something-something to draw all the attention to the hair. A little flower, a bejewelled pin, or maybe even a flower crown (my personal favourite, because I feel like such a queen). The accessories can add to your look... Photo from Marchesa S/S '15 Or tame all that hair into something simple and manageable (a time saver): Photo by Kevin Tachman at Lanvin Trend #3: Braids This is a trend that I think will never go out of style. I mean, the pig tail braids have gone out of style, but the side braids are definitely being rocked this year (and last year). Braids can be a difficult trend to get the hang of though. I find it depends on the day whether my braid looks beautiful, or like a 5 year old did it. To [...]
Here on the wet coast those of us whose hair tends to frizz right up in the rain or humidity have a tough go of it. Thankfully there are some very cool styles that encourage you to embrace that natural texture and make it a feature, not a bug. Here's a taste from Harper's Bazaar: Image: IMAXTREE Let your braids be a bit ruffled and let that natural frizz act like a soft halo while you are at the beach or garden party. Image: IMAXTREE Make like style setter Rihanna with an updo that lets the frizz be the feature. Letting go of perfection never looked so perfect. Image: Getty Keri Russel sports the ultimate undone bun. We've heard from "experts" that the top knot is out, but we'll believe it when we stop seeing everyone wearing it. Here tendrils are left loose on the sides for a chic-yet-casual look. Image: uncredited from Bottega Venata Mixed textures are always a showstopper. Make a deep side part, smooth the top with product (we recommend Aveda's Anti-Humectant Pomade), and use a pick or wide tooth comb to fluff out curls to the max. Image: IMAXTREE Sweep your locks back, leave out some pretty (and a bit frizzy) pieces on the sides and nape, and finish with a beautiful accessory for a super easy yet suprisingly polished look. See the whole set of images at HarpersBazaar.com, then tell us on our Facebook page which you liked best, or what you have planned to #freethefrizz this summer. PS Whether or not you want to rock the frizz or calm it down, at Sin 7 Salon we carry the full line of amazing Aveda products, and there's something for every hair type. We'll be more than happy to recommend something perfect for you. 604-560-5360
Once again Aveda has knocked it out of the park with a new product launch. Seriously, this company just keeps getting better and better (as if we though that was even possible)! Introducing Thickening Tonic, a lightweight spray that takes hair from fine and flat to fluffy and full. Proven to thicken hair instantly with just one use Expands strands from roots to ends Powered by botanicals including certified organic amla fruit 97% naturally derived* *From plants, non-petroleum minerals, or water I have personally tried this product on my curly-yet-baby-fine-and-thinning hair, and I can say that it gave me tons of volume with no extra weight or sticky feeling. And like everything Aveda it smells divine. Success! Run, don't walk to Sin 7 Salon to get your hands on this little miracle today! We have lots in stock but we predict it will fly off the shelves once we start spritzing away on our guests this week. If you've tried it let us know on our Facebook page how you liked it.
It's spring and as the weather heats up and the flowers start blooming, many of us begin toying with the idea of a major hair change. Here's an article which describes one woman's experience going from long, to long bob, to a true bob. (Language is NSFW or those with sensitive-to-swears eyeballs, FYI.) Author Michelle Ruiz's brave new bob, on Elle.com Let's just say I'm getting used to it. Kind of like how I'm still getting used to my grown woman self. It's going to take a little more than a haircut to shed the vestiges of girl past, but I'm getting there. Gardner was right - a bob has a way of making you feel cool, even when you might actually go home from work most days, change into sweatpants, put on the Sesame Street Pandora station and give your baby a bath. Plus, I've started to see my hair as its own edgy accessory, and it's making me brave. A month after cutting my hair, I made a big, scary (yet exciting) decision to become a freelance writer, something I've dreamed about doing for a long time. I don't feel "pretty" in the same way as before, and while I still want to look pretty (who doesn't?), I'm realizing that's not the compliment that means the most to me. I'd rather be fierce, hot, smart, or confident; someone brave enough to chop her hair off on a Wednesday afternoon and not look back. Read about this woman's gutsy decision to lose some length, and if you're in the White Rock/South Surrey area give us a call at 604-560-5360 to book a consultation at the salon where we can discuss whether or not you're ready to take the plunge into this season's hottest cut - the classic bob! And [...]
As you may have heard, there was a recent bunker fuel spill in English Bay. This latest event was considered to be "small". Most of us figure a major oil spill on our beautiful coast is inevitable. What you may not know is that because Sin 7 is a certified Green Circle Salon, we collect your hair clippings which can be used to help clean up oil spills! The hair is collected in a special bin and picked up by Green Circle, and then stuffed into nylon casing and used as sorbent boom. Hair booms standing by to absorb oil spills From a recent article in the Vancouver Courier: Cutting your hair can help with current cleanup efforts in English Bay after this week's oil spill. A Canadian company has an established a program to recycle hair clippings from salons to make "booms" used to soak up heavy oil in water. Jennifer Henry, regional director of Green Circle Salons, said hair is the best material to absorb oil. Participating salons separate used tin foils and leftover dye from the hair clippings, and the company collects the leftover hair to be recycled. The hair is then stuffed into nylon casing, creating the boom. Henry said when there's an oil spill situation, they reach out to affected communities and donate booms. "We donate the booms to anyone who wants to put them to use, whether it's a governmental organization or private cleaning company, West Coast Marine Response, the Coast Guard or just your average concerned citizen. Donate them to whomever can get them in the most expedient fashion." When the Courier contacted Henry she was at Sunset Beach with booms, waiting for the tide to come in and start the cleanup. Currently, Green Circle Salons doesn't have a deployment system set up [...]
If you're one of our regular guests you'll know that we keep several iPads around the salon. They're great tools for consultations (loads of visuals at our fingertips), and a fun way to kill time while your hair colour is processing. Next time you're in, check out the 3 new folders that we've created for your viewing pleasure: Aveda Sourcing Stories, Aveda Makeup How-To's, and Aveda Hair How-To's. Each of these folders has several videos for you to enjoy in each of those subjects. Ever wonder where Aveda gets ingredients like Babassu, Morikue, Argan oil, Tumeric, or Uruku pigment? Now you can check out these amazing stories about organic and sustainable sourcing, processing, and many partnerships with indiginous people around the world. Cool, hey? For instance, did you know that the organic lavender and rose oil in Aveda products comes from Bulgarian family flower farms formerly occupied by the communist government? Indeed! Check out those and many other super interesting sourcing stories next time you're in. You'll learn just how committed Aveda is to protecting the earth as well as its people, and where they get those exotic, high-performance ingredients. Curious how to do a smokey eye, or get a semi-matte finish with mineral makeup? Wonder no more as we've compiled the best of Aveda's makeup how-to's and plunked them onto the iPads. Also included will be the latest 2 limited-edition palette tutorials so you will always be in-the-know on the latest makeup trends and techniques. We've also included Aveda hair tutorials featuring pros like the amazing Antoinette Beenders. Learn how to create a sculpted short style, get all-day smooth hair, or how to enhance natural curl, among other things. If you have any questions just ask one of our Vanity Managers and we'll be more than happy to assist [...]
Sigh. We really REALLY didn't want to ever have to do this. Instead of the issue of no-shows and last-minute cancellations getting better, it's gotten exponentially worse, so we've had to implement a new policy. Please take a minute to read about it here, and if you have any questions or concerns please direct them to Courtney at email@example.com. If there is a true emergency, of course we will deal with that accordingly. We hold our guests in the highest regard, and we absolutely respect your time and the fact that "life happens". We also care deeply for our team of stylists, who work so very hard at Sin 7 Salon making you look and feel wonderful. As you know, we live in one of the most expensive regions in North America, and our cost of living is going nowhere but UP UP UP. When you're missing a huge chunk of a paycheque due to no-shows and last-minute cancellations, well, it makes it that much harder just to survive. Our stylists work on a commission basis, and we need to protect them. When you make an appointment, that time is held for you. If you don't show, that stylist doesn't get paid for that time (sometimes up to 3 or more hours, depending). If you cancel within 24 hours, we have a very slim chance of filling the spot. More than 24 hours, we can usually do it. We hope you understand.
What's up in hair cuts, styles, and colour for spring? Harpers Bazaar brings us a nifty slide show of trends fresh off the runway. Frankly, there's nothing too groundbreaking this season, just re-hashing and tweaking of seasons past, but still very pretty, and best of all, mostly wearable for us mortal women! Here's a look: Pretty Boho waves are back again for another spring/summer l like big buns and I cannot lie! Channel your inner Daenerys Stormborn, First of her Name, Queen of the Andals, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, etc... with some gorgous braids this summer Long ponytails. Yawn. GAH! Why, fashion world, why do you insist on foisting this greazy "trend" on us season after season? Just please stop it. To leave you on a high note, here is another recycled trend but a very lovely one. Accessories are back in a big way, and a great way to dress up your look. So which, if any, of these high-fashion trends will you be trying this year? Let us know in the comments at our Facebook page. (We don't take comments here on the blog because we have a day job and the bots/web crawlers that make fake accounts became too much to keep up with.) If you're in White Rock or South Surrey (or surrounding area), hit us up at Sin 7 Salon for an apointment so we can help you adapt these trends. 604-560-5360 / 1195 Johnston Rd
Hey everyone just a reminder that our old phone number is no longer active. To reach Sin 7 Salon you'll need to edit your speed dial to 604-560-5360. Thanks! See ya soon!
Bobs are back in a big way, baby! Well actually they've never really gone out since like...1920, but there's a reason for that. The bob is one of the most versatile looks out there, almost universally flattering, and works with most hair types including very fine. Last season's Lob (a name I have always hated with a white hot buring intensity aka "long bob") is getting a shorter update this spring/summer. We are seeing more blunt-ish, classic looks now a la Vanessa Hudgens: One thing's for sure, this season's bob has gone a bit shorter - definitely above the shoulders! Lauren Conrad also bobbed her hair, but in a less blunt, more choppy/textured way: Uh, we are seriously hoping those are stunt scissors and that she is not advocating doing this cut yourself! Please, leave it to the pros or you will end up with a MOB (messed up bob) or a COB (crooked bob) or a IASHMOB (I'm a sobbing hot mess bob). We will be more than happy to help give you the bob of your dreams! Bring pictures so we can discuss what you desire, and we will help make the call as to whether or not texture (ranging from a little to a lot) or bluntness is the best way to go for your particular hair type. We'll also discuss your perfect or preferred length, taking into account your face, neck and shoulders as well as your comfort level with above-the-shoulders hair. Bangs? Maybe! Sure! But we agree with Kristin Ess that this modern take on the bob looks coolest without them and we should be careful that there's not too much hair overwhelming your lovely face. Give us a jingle at 604-560-5360 or book online (just scroll up and to the top right for the link) [...]
Wow, Kim Kardashian has gone platinum! Admittedly not our favourite look for her, but it's definitely a gutsy move. You might be inspired to do the same, and that's great! Snarky picture aside, change is good and as hairdressers we totally encourage experimentation with your look. In the interest of full disclosure and giving you the information you need to make a wise decision, here are some facts about going from very dark to very light. It very well might take 2 - 3 appointments, at about 3 hours each. And you will be charged for each of them. Pricing depends on the stylist and their experience. Being a platinum blonde is perhaps not for the budget conscious. Why might it take that amount of time and work? Well, we will be removing almost all of the pigment from your natural hair, and if you've colored your hair already, we need to remove all of that artificial pigment as well. This can be a wild card (aka "unpredictable result), depending on what you've used. Been doing years of dark color? There's a slight chance it will be impossible to remove it all. We might get you to a light brown in one appointment, then have you come back in a few weeks (after lots of deep conditioning treatments at home) and have another go at it. While we are highly educated and skilled, we sometimes can't control the chemistry and physics of what is happening in your hair shaft. It's also SUPER IMPORTANT that you are truthful with us and tell us exactly how many times/how long ago you've coloured your hair so we can deal with it accordingly. This process is damaging. No matter what kind of gentle lightener we use, removing that much pigment is going to beat [...]
